July12, 2013 “Who to Trust” Who do you trust when it comes to your deepest and darkest secret? It is a trusted friend? You know they are getting really hard to find in this “Me” world. What does your mom or your dad not know about you? Do they know everything? Are you sure you feel comfortable enough to tell them what’s in the deep recesses of your heart and mind? There are those who’ve had moms with whom they shared their soul, and for others it’s been a dad who has been there for you. So, with whom can you trust your fears and with pour out your heart that you can trust? Even if you do have a trusted friend with whom you are able to share everything with, they’ll not always be there. I’ve had some truly good friends through the years, but in time, they have one by one fallen by the wayside by the distance or choice. For me there has been only one who has remained a close friend, but someday he or I will be gone. Then we may think that mom or dad will always be there for us, but those who’ve lived as long as I have, have most likely had to say goodbye to them in this life. Then there you are wondering who you can trust with your fears and the deep dark secrets of your life. When it comes to trust, we’ve all had trouble at some point or another. Sometimes it is because we are afraid to let someone else into our lives, and them it may be because some people are not trustworthy. They have big mouths or they can’t keep a trust or something that was shared with them in the strictest confidence. There is nothing quite like a trusted friend breaking a promised confidence to break a friendship. It’s not that you are no longer friends, it’s just that you no longer feel comfortable sharing with them something that you do not want the world to know. You, just can’t tell them everything, so who do you trust? Through the years I have shared things which were very personal with friends to only have them break my trust. We all need someone that we can trust, who will love us no matter who we are and what we’ve done. King David had such a friend in Saul’s son Jonathan, but there came a day when David could no longer go to Jonathan his trusted friend and pour out his heart. Then a day came when his trusted friend had died and with whom would he share all he had in his heart? Yes, even kings have fears and secrets in their hearts that they do no want others to know. David the shepherd boy who became King remembered that while on those hillsides watching his father’s sheep that he could trust God. He trusted God with his fears and his deep dark secrets. He says in Psalm 13:4, “Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.” David appealed to God as he faced his enemies. He says to God, my enemies are Your enemies and when they defeat me, they will say not only have we defeated David, but we have defeated the God of David. So, David learned as long as He walked with and was on God’s side He could trust Him, because he had nothing to hide. God is the one we can trust with all of our secrets, unless we are living a life with something to hide. You see God is holy and anything in our lives that is not right will be exposed by His presence. It is not that we can’t trust Him, it is that we cannot hide anything from Him. As we get closer to Him, His purity will expose everything in us that is not pure. It is like holding a freshly washed white item up to a newly fallen snow. The snow will expose the dirt that may still be in the item we washed. Nevertheless, we can trust God with all our fears, all our trials and all of our needs. Just tell Him, the truth is He invites us to do that and as we share with Him, we know Who to trust.
