June 10, 2013 12:42 Germany floods break dam, thousands flee Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in eastern Germany when the River Elbe burst through a dam, officials said on Sunday. In Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany, more than 23,000 residents fled their homes on Sunday afternoon after streets and buildings were flooded and electricity was shut off. Around 700 soldiers were trying frantically to build a dam of sandbags around a power substation.
