June 1530, Diet of Augsburg, a delegation of Lutheran princes presented to Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, 28 articles stating that the followers of the new Wittenberg theology taught in concord with the catholic faith as delivered by the Apostles and maintained by the Fathers and that certain abuses had been corrected. Although this document, which became known as the Augsburg Confession, was rejected by the emperor and refuted by the Papal periti, it became the primary document in the Lutheran confessional corpus.
