June 17th Week MONTREAT CLASSES and CHANGE NOTICE No Monday class: Gyotakyu Printing: Gyotaku (Japanese, from gyo “fish” + taku “rubbing”) is the traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid-1800s. T, 2-4:30PM, $20 No Monday class: Clay Lithography: Using clay as a matrix, students will create a design with texture onto a rolled slab of clay. Students may incise, paint, wipe away, alter, and further embellish the inked surface before pulling a single unique print. T, 2-4PM, $20 Visiting Artists Melanie Tucker: Greenville, MS, received her BFA in Commercial Art at the Mississippi University for Women, and is a member of the MS Art Education Association. Her preferred media are printmaking, papermaking, book arts, and figure studies. She is married to Craig, a fisheries biologist whose love of all-things-fish has rubbed off on his wife despite her revulsion to any food item that can swim, slither, or shed its scaly skin. Lilly Iris Mitchell: She received her degree in education at Delta State University. Iris has taught art students from ages 4 to 84. Her preferred media include watercolor and pastel. In 2002 she received the Creativity Award for the Northern Region of Mississippi, and in 2004, the Art in Education Award from the Greenville Arts Council at their annual Greenville Honors Its Own event. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Greenville Arts Council and is a charter member of Delta Artists Association. Lou Anne Lamar: She lives in Greenville, MS, and is the former owner of Beaucoup Sewing. She is in great demand as the one who can sew anything, and smock everything else. She is a quilter, heirloom sewer, and renowned fabric artist. Martha Weissinger: She is a native of Greenville, MS. She graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. with a Masters in Education. In addition, she studied at The John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. Martha has been smocking for thirty years, and enjoys sharing her love of smocking. Her other hobbies include origami, judging horticulture, French hand sewing, and soap making. Atcha Turner: Atcha is originally from Thailand, and loves sharing her culture through food and art. In addition to being a renowned chef, she is a professional potter. We are honored to welcome her this week teaching clay masks! Mary Swezey: She is a professional textile artist. She has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Fiber Arts from Arizona State University. She lives in Richmond, VA, where she teaches classes and workshops for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Craft and Pottery Classes Map Crafts: Using maps we’ll create simple small monotype prints on paper. These will be embellished with paint and finished for use as wall hangings. We will reuse map scraps to create hanging ornaments and experiment with staining fabric with tea to create maplines on fabric. Mary Swezy. M and T 2-4:30, $20 Smocked Baby Bishop: Learn to smock a bishop dress or bubble without a smocking board! Martha Weissinger, a seasoned smocker, teaches smocking without using a cumbersome smocking board.. M-Th 9:30-11:30, $30 Christening Caps and Church Dolls! Join Lou Anne Lamar in the sewing room items to make babies smile at every turn! The church doll is a cute quick pocket-size doll made from a hankie. The christening cap is a smocked bonnet with ribbons and lace! Metal Tooling: In the ancient tradition of repousse and Mexican folk craft beautiful metal crosses and metal-tooled framed mirrors using stylus, pencils and simple wood tools, antiquing our final work with black India ink. Mary Ann Athens, T or W 2-4:30, $20 Silk Painting: Draw with a liquid resist to create designs and patterns on silk scarves. Once the resist has dried and set with an iron, fabric paints are applied to complete the design. Students can expect to finish a long scarf. Mary Swezey. W and Th 2-4:30, $20 Origami Nativity: In one sitting, you can make an entire nativity scene from paper. It’s fun, creative and relaxing! You can even recycle old wrapping paper and grocery bags in this project. Martha Weissinger will show you how to fold the figures for your set. W, 2-4, $10 Tissue Paper Painting: Using paintbrushes, tissue paper and glue, create a beautiful landscape, figure, or still life with Iris Mitchell. All materials will be provided. Great for youth groups! W, 2-4:30PM, $15 Painted Floor Cloths: Kay Clegg and Lisa Galloway use 18” x 24” vinyl flooring to create colorful floor cloths. These last forever and work wonderfully in your kitchen or under the dog’s bowl! W & Th 2-4:30. $20 Exploding Boxes: describe boxes that have been cunningly created so that the sides cascade outwards as the lid is removed. This gives all sorts of scope for creative ideas, for instance adding rubber stamped tags with a special prayer, attaching decorative embellishments, adding keepsakes or mementos, journaling, and much more! Th 2-4:30PM, $20 Life Drawing: Hannah Garrity, our Liturgical Artist for the summer, teaches drawing from life using pencil and charcoal. All supplies provided.
