June 17th is the Memorial of the Blessed Paolo Burali dArezzo, - TopicsExpress

June 17th is the Memorial of the Blessed Paolo Burali dArezzo, sometime Archbishop and Champion of Neapolitan liberties. It is the anniversary of the Arab invasion of Sicily, which initiated nearly 300 years of warfare for control of the Island, of the Union of Kalmar by Denmark, Sweden & Norway, James Cooks entry into the Royal Navy, the Battle of Bunker/Breeds Hill, Thaddeus Lowes balloon flight over the White House, the Battle of the Rosebud during the Great Souix War, and the independence of Iceland from Denmark. It the birthday or, among others, the first modern soldier, Maurice of Nassau, of Boy Wonder King Charles XII of Sweden, who set the pattern for invasions of Russia by ambitious Western adventurers, Harry Patch, who upon his death in 2009 was the last surviving British veteran of the trenches, and William R. Anderson, who took the Nautilius to 90 North. This is yet another possible date for the notable conqueror and drunkard Alexander the Great, and more certainly that of, among others, Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, hacked to death by religious dissidents, King Jan III Sobieski of Poland, and Cuban Revolutionary hero Maximo Gomez. https://strategypage/today-in-military-history.aspx
