June 22 and 23 Cave Junction, Oregon to Napa Valley, California You know you are in Cave Junction when your first stop of the day is Coffee Heaven with an angel holding a cup of latte on the roof! Perfect. The drive down the coast to Redwood National and State Park is so beautiful with lots of “sea stacks” along the beach – see the rocks in the photos. We drove through the Redwood National Park and holy cow, it is all that it is advertised to be! We drove through a 785 year old tree that is 90’ tall. In the park, trees grow as tall as 380’, up to 3,200 years old with bark up to 31” thick and up to 40’ in diameter. It is hard to imagine but on this trip it is, as Piper says, “I feel like I am in my imagination!” As we drove into the Dry Creek Valley the landscape changed again into miles and miles of vineyards. Our first visit to a vineyard was in the Russian River Valley - Ferrari-Canero. Good recommendation Krista and Paul and Terry – a beautiful place with great wine! June 23rd was the warmest day of our trip so far at 69 degrees– in the Napa Valley. We drove the Silverado Trail stopping at Stag’s Leap and then Sterling. The gondola ride to Sterling was fun, the tour was so interesting and wine super good especially the Malvasia Bianca. A short stop in Yountville and the Bouchon Bakery showed us a very cool village. I could stay there a few days with no problem! We made a stop at the Culinary Institute of America Greystone. Alas, we did not stay for lunch but walked around their beautiful Institute. Our reason for only two vineyards and no lunch was to get in a most interesting game of golf in at Eagle Vines Vineyard. We played a round of golf among the vineyards with jack rabbits watching each hole and a very cool island green. We played entirely in and around the winery’s vineyards, definitely one of the most unique and beautiful courses we have ever seen. This made Chuck very happy!! He is also happy we will be spending the next three nights in the same Sheraton in San Rafael. It saves a lot of unloading and loading.
