June 22 is the second Sunday after Pentecost. We are in the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. Regular people call it summer and fall. No feasts, no high holy days, no times of penitence and reflection--just Sunday after Sunday after Pentecost, thirty three of them this year. The preaching lesson this week is from Matthew 10:24-39, a snippet of Jesus instructions to his disciples as they (and we) gear up to do Jesus work in the world. The most famous line in the lesson may well be 34-36: Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter in law against her mother in law. Whoa, Jesus, those are hard sayings! And it gets worse in verse 37. This will be a tough one to preach. But I am game. You will get more out of worship if (1) you show up and (2) you read this lesson before you come. Better yet, read it in two or three translations. Then come and see; come and hear. I look forward to being with you at 8:45 and 11:00 oclock on Sunday. Blessings, Lee
