June 26, 23:50 Quick update on the commercial fishery in the Naknek/Kvichak river district. The two rivers combined have a total of 279,750 Sockeye salmon up the rivers (escapement) and a commercial catch of 1,132,755. Still 8 out 10 fish coming to these two rivers to spawn are caught in the bay. The drift nets from 395 vessels catch 85% of these fish. The set nets catch the other 15%. I have not located the data on the "by catch" (collateral catch) of King Salmon in these nets. I often wonder what other impacts on this eco system killing 8 out 10 of a single species has.
