June 3, 1964…An exhausted Ringo Starr collapsed during a photo shoot for The Saturday Evening Post and was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with pharyngitis and tonsillitis. With the band scheduled to leave for a world tour in 27 hours, manager Brian Epstein and producer George Martin agreed on his replacement, session drummer Jimmy Nicol, who had drummed on a Beatles covers album. Nicol was immediately rushed into the studio to rehearse six songs, and then he joined the group on tour for 11 days. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney asked how he was doing on the tour, Nicol always replied with Its getting better, which eventually inspired the song Getting Better that appeared on the Sgt. Pepper album.
