June 7, 1973, 40 years ago: The Yankees purchase pitcher Sam McDowell from the San Francisco Giants. This would turn out to be a mistake. Like Herb Score, Sudden Sam was a fireballing lefthander who got his start with the Cleveland Indians. Unlike Herb, Sam was his own worst enemy, drinking himself out of All-Star berths. The previous season, 1972, was his last good year. He appeared in only 16 games for the Yankees, and threw his last major league pitch at age 33. He finally went to rehab, went to college, paid off his debts, and in 1993 won a World Series ring -- as a psychologist and addiction counselor for the Toronto Blue Jays. He now runs a retirement community for former players, including himself, age 70.
