June Bugs: The Moth Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19 Recommended Reading Matthew 19:16-21 Have you ever wondered why Scripture never exhorts us to breathe, grow physically, or blink our eyes? Because we do those things naturally. Conversely, the Bibles teachings are directed toward things we dont do naturally. Because of our fallen, natural state, we have to be taught how to live a life consistent with the values of Gods kingdom. Take Matthew 6:19-21 for example. Jesus taught His followers to lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. He said that because it is our natural inclination to accumulate treasures on earth instead of investing in eternal purposes. Anyone who has ever discovered a small (or large!) hole in a favorite woolen garment knows that Jesus was right: A tiny moth can destroy an expensive item of clothing. Metaphorically speaking, in heaven there are no moths, no rust, and no thieves. Investments in the kingdom of God are permanently protected. Consider your own treasures today and where they are stored. Pray for wisdom in doing what comes supernaturally more than naturally. Whatever is your greatest joy and treasure, that is your god.
