June27, 2014: Fooling Everyone All the Time? You are all very intelligent people my fbfs. You must have noted that while Sahara Shree Subrato Roy is cooling his heels in Tihar Jail, one of his latest business verticals, the Sahara Q chain is going full blast with its ad blitz using most expensive cine stars Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan for its head and shoulder above Q supplies! That explains his entrepreneurship! I might as well give you a bit of his rise from rags to riches story. He began with Peerless type of para banking, branched off to housing, publishing, media, civil aviation, hospitality, and now Q stores. As a known researcher of Indian industrial houses, I learnt the fine art of identifying the most significant characteristic(s) of each industrial family I picked up for my attention. In this respect, Subrato is unparalleled! He is the only Indian entrepreneur who cornered his initial capital from the poorest of the poor but that is not his only defining character. What indeed is his success in persuading a large number of politicians to park their ill-gotten riches with him! Well, don’t tempt me to name them because then I would be facing the type of music Prof R K Hazari faced when he published his seminal study, Structure of the Corporate Private Sector! Another defining trait of Subrato’s entrepreneurship is abandoning his sinking business ships frequently, and latching on to the new ones. This was jolly good while it lasted but it was such a proposition that had to crash land some time. What has gone wrong with him this time is that he had miscalculated on one Mr Sinha from the SEBI.He had been previously fooling the regulatory bodies on his sources of finances, and had successfully negotiated past misdemeanors with consummate ease. This time he got fixed since none from his heavyweight political supporters came to his rescue. He even tried to browbeat the SC with his familiar tactics until the SC called his bluff! Fooling is a fine craft but even in that field the best of its practitioners take a huge hit once in a while. Subrato believed that he can keep on fooling people all the time!
