Jung wrote that Dreams are impartial, spontaneous products of the unconscious psyche...they show us the unvarnished natural truth Not all dreams are equally useful for this purpose. Many of them are concerned with the days preoccupations and shed little light on the deeper aspects of the dreamers psyche. Occasionally, one has a dream that is so remote from ones life, so numinous ( Jungs favorite word for an intensely moving experience), and so strange and uncanny that it does not seem to belong to the dreamer. It is like a visitation from another world, which in truth it is, the other world being the subterranean one of the unconscious. In ancient times, and even today among some people some dreams are regarded as messages from Gods or ancestral figures.. The general function of dreams is to try to restore our psychological balance by producing dream material that reestablishes.. the total psychic equilibrium (Man and His Symbols, 1964, p.50)
