Junior track cycling team bag two more medals New Zealand bagged two further medals on the second night of finals at the UCI Juniors Track World Championships in Korea today. Waipukurau teenager Regan Gough won a silver medal in the 4000m individual pursuit, while the women’s team pursuit matched the men by winning a bronze medal. Gough, who rode in three team pursuit races on the first day, bounced back to qualify second fastest behind Portugal’s Ivo Emanuel Oliveira with less than 0.7 seconds separating the pair who were two seconds clear of the next closest competitors. However the Kiwi suffered a slow puncture in the final, to clock 3:22.277 with Oliveira proving the class of the field with a 3:18.905. This means Gough matched the efforts of his cousin Westley Gough who won the silver medal at the juniors world championships in the same event in 2006. “It was hard luck for Regan in the final as he would have liked to have gone faster in the final,” head coach Ross Machejefski said. “That said we would not take anything away from the Portuguese rider who is very classy.” The women’s team pursuit combination of Holly Edmondston, Bryony Botha, Holly White, Nina Wollaston qualified second fastest in 3:44.350 behind Australia. However they were edged in the semifinal and then faced the bronze medal ride-off against Russia. The Kiwi quartet was dominant in the ride, winning the bronze in 4:45.157 with the Russians more than four seconds back. Australia won the gold medal with a powerful effort over Italy. Palmerston North’s Jordan Castle finished fifth in the final of the keirin competition. He was third in his first round heat, but won the repechage to progress. Castle was second in the semifinal and then fifth in the six-strong final. Fellow Manawatu rider Luke Mudgway was ninth in the 10km scratch race while Christchurch sprint star Olivia Podmore was sixth in the 500m time trial in 36.222s.
