This master class focuses on the notion of cultural techniques as it is used in the context of contemporary media theory. Cultural techniques (Kulturtechniken) is a term used by the likes of Bernhard Siegert and others to refer to a range of “ontological and aesthetic operations that process distinctions (and the blurring of distinctions) which are basic to the sense production of any specific culture.” The notions has been in use for a longer time but it has recently gained new international currency with new translations and in the wake of the impact of Friedrich Kittler’s slightly alternative material media theory. The master class discusses the concept, how it relates to media studies and its usability in different case studies and situations. We will read some key texts in order to have a shared ground for discussion. The masterclass will be limited to 20 participants. Potential attendees should send an expression of interest to Dr. Tom Apperley ([email protected]) by the 6th of February. The expression of interest must contain (in one attached document): • Academic CV (maximum two pages) • A brief description of the project that they are working on and how they hope that the workshop can assist them Applicants will be notified by the 13th of February of the status of their application. Further details of the Masterclass, including the schedule will be released closer to the date.
