Just Added: Master of the Universe (1987) Based on the popular line of toys and starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man (his first big starring role, following hot on the heels of his villainous turn as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV) Masters of the Universe removes the action from the original Eternea of the cartoon series and transplants it to earth, not unlike Star Trek: The Voyage Home had the previous year. Cue humour derived from the situations the fish-out-of-water characters find themselves in and allowing its producers to save a fortune on sets. One of two huge projects then-fledgling producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus released in 1987, Masters of the Universe proved as its counterpart Superman IV: The Quest for Peace had, that big licences don’t necessarily make for lavish productions. Like the majority of the bigger films released by Cannon, little of the films talked-up budget ended up on the screen but all said and done, Masters of the Universe is an enjoyable sci-fi romp for those who are nostalgic for ‘80s cheesefests.
