Just Ask Your Father for It “Do me a favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” (Judges 1:10-21, NIV) Today’s story retells the events written in Joshua 14-15 where Caleb and the sons of Judah took possession of their land inheritance. Out of this account, even Caleb’s daughter became bold enough to claim her inheritance by simply asking her father for it. “Just ask your father for it. That’s what I did.” This would be the advice that Aksah the daughter of Caleb would give to you. During the chaotic days of conquering the Promised Land, the men of Israel were busy fighting the inhabitants and dividing the land inheritance. You don’t hear much about what women and children did except to assume that they just waited around until their men worked things out. They were even offered as a prize, like Caleb’s daughter Aksah. Like other women, Aksah could have just accepted her part and be content with what was given her. She was not. She saw that her husband’s inheritance was the Negev (desert area) and they were going to need a source of water. She first tried persuading her new husband to solicit for the watering ground, but she ended up asking her father for it herself. Why? Your guess is good as mine. Maybe Othniel was afraid of asking for too much, didn’t want to be nuisance, or didn’t want to appear greedy, whatever. Aksah was not going to let this one go, however. What good is the inheritance in the Negev without the abundant source of water? In the days when all you heard was men’s voice crying out, a lone female voice cried out, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me a land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” She simply asked and her father gave it to her. In fact, it says she not only received one but two springs—the upper and lower springs. That’s it. That’s all there is to it. Just say, “Do me a favor God. Can you give me this?” God may give you not only what you asked, but the “upper and lower” blessings too. Why is it so hard for us to come to our Heavenly Father and just ask? Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you” (Mt.7:7). Your Heavenly Father knows what you need even before you ask Him. If you as earthly fathers know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him? Don’t pout, sulk, or complain. Just go and ask your Father for it like Aksah.
