Just Do It So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty. ISAIAH 55:11 The hypothetical scenario I shared with you yesterday about the frustrations of family worship probably isn’t too far from what you’ve experienced. Just about all of us who have ventured to put the Bible front and center in our homes have had to crawl past situations very similar to that one. One of the best pieces of advice I could give you about getting started is this: Take the pressure off! Don’t make this harder than it actually is. Do what works for your family. At different times in our family’s life, we’ve done different things: Barbara led our youngest girls through a children’s Bible study in the mid-morning, just working through the book and asking the questions that were written there. •I took the school-age kids to a local grocery store for a doughnut break fast once or twice a week, where we’d read a chapter from Proverbs—stopping at any verse that caught our interest enough to talk about it. •When the youngest four were teens, we started each day with a reading from a devotional that shared stories from history about men and women of faith. •After dinner on occasion, I might have raised an ethical question of some kind, just to get everyone thinking about how they might handle it. Then I’d read a Scripture that related to our discussion. There’s no formula. No guideline. No perfectly right way. The only real requirement is that you do something to get your family into the Bible, even if it feels uncomfortable at first, and plan out what you’re going to talk about. You and your children simply need to hear God’s Word and interact with it on a regular, daily basis. I promise you, He’ll take care of it from there. DISCUSS Find a topic that you need to discuss at the dinner table. Schedule it. PRAY Ask God for great resources to help you get started.
