Just Kids by Patti Smith Finished Just Kids by Patti Smith for our book group. Really recommend it. It chronicles her rise to rock stardom living on the fringe in NYC of the 70s and her intensely close relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. Up close and personal descriptions of icons such as Janis Joplin, Allen Ginsburg and Andy Warhol permeate the book. Even if you arent a huge fan of Patti Smith, it is a wonderful encapsulation of that vivid period in the NYC art scene (drama, music and art) and provides great insight into what made her the artist she is today, what made Mapplethorpe an artist, and their relationship.
