Just a Thought: Unity and diversity in the same church? Oh really! - TopicsExpress

Just a Thought: Unity and diversity in the same church? Oh really! Yes really. In fact the early church sets quite an example for the church today. As Paul closes his letter to the Romans with a list of personal greetings and acknowledgments, we see just how divers and yet unified the church at Rome was. A list of some twenty seven names, backgrounds, ethnic, economic and physical differences emerge; of which Paul acknowledges as not merely fellow saints, but hard workers for the lord. And he requests “Greet one another with a holy kiss.” (A sign of love honor and respect) (Rom 16:16) We see in Paul’s list that every member has a place of service in the body of Christ and each member is essential to the body (men and women). What can we take from this list of faithful servants? First, you have a role in the Body of Christ (every member does). No one has all the gifts, but every member has been given spiritual gifts to be used to serve the Lord and the body of Christ. Determine yours and uses them faithfully. Second, how nice it is to be recognized and appreciated for what we do. What a leadership example Paul sets when he develops and appreciates his most vital assets (the other people who are in ministry with him). Even if no one ever says thanks for what you do – you do it as unto the Lord anyway, He is taking note and He will reward you. But leaders, take a page from Paul’s play book acknowledge those around you, help them and they will always help you. Finally, while there was much diversity in this list and the church at Rome; and many received different praise, they all worked in cooperation not in competition. Diversity and unity are not only possible in the church – that is the church. Just because everyone isn’t like you doesn’t mean you cannot work together. Love, honor and respect others for their labor in the Lord’s work and you too will see diversity and unity become a reality in your local church body.
