Just a bit of geeking out...I was looking for a good, quick video of an ornamental wood lathe in action, but am very happy with this good, long video of an adapted one being used for leather-hard clay. A related article states: Simple turning lathes had been used for the production of pottery since the early 1700s. By the 1730s virtually all hollow wares (mugs, jugs, cups, bowls, and so forth) were being lathe-turned to shape and thin the bodies. The engine-turning lathe further provided the ability to cut regular patterns in the clay bodies to create decorative elements. chipstone.org/html/publications/CIA/2004/rickard/2004rickindex.html
