Just a bit of the tooting of ones own horn here, but I belong to (and share moderation duties on) a Facebook group dedicated to vintage Japanese electric guitars. A couple weeks ago someone posted that their favorite guitar had been stolen and could we keep an eye out for it. Yesterday, a few of our eagle-eye members spotted it on eBay. The owner was notified and today, the guitar was recovered. Score one for the good guys (and musicians everywhere)! This is a great group of collectors. The group is just coming up on 5,000 members too. (A year ago, that number stood at about 500.) We know how to do Social Internet the right way: 1) Keep membership limited to the truly interested (fewer is better than more if more means low-quality); 2) Keep discussion topics focused on the theme (ruthlessly weed out spam, off-topic posts, and flame wars); and 3) As a moderator, participate every day with positive comments, factual information and limited-to-no self-promotion.
