Just a few minutes ago a woman came to my door offering a brochure to join her in her religious services. I told her No thank you, I am not religious. With a stunned look upon her face she asked me, Why? I simply told her, I am an atheist. I do not need religion in my life to guide me in any way. Of course, she was taken aback with a very confused look on her face. She said to me, I do not understand. You seem so sweet. I asked her, does me being an atheist make me a nefarious person? She didnt exactly respond so I told her, You should never be surprised when a person tells you that they are an atheist. It does not mean that they are malicious or nefarious. It means simply, that their perspective of the world is different than yours. And thats ok. She seemed to have problems taking this in, so I asked her, What is your mission in life? She gave me a lengthy response of which I cannot exactly recall, but the gist of it was that her mission was to help people understand God so that they may be happy. As an anthropologist, I explained to her that for my cause in life is to help and understand people. And I understand that some people do not need god and some people do. That doesnt make them hateful or any less appreciative of the world around them. The point that I am getting at is that one should not use Atheism to bash people who are religious, Christians especially. Acting in such a manner does not make Atheists any better than those who use religion to justify their actions. Most Christians will usually never waver from their beliefs by the persuasion of another who does not believe. The most effective approach to use when a person of a religious fervor approaches you with the purpose of conversion, is to be modest and well-mannered. If they are under the impression that we are despicable, demonstrate that we are not. This kind of effort will produce more positive results in the world.
