Just a few weeks ago I had lunch at the Commonwealth Drive hawker centre. The moment I parked my car and got out of it, so many memories flooded me. This is where my aunty got married. This is where my dad had beer with his kakis. This if where I watched the National Day march pass sitted on my fathers shoulders. This was where I bought my story books from.... I even remembered exactly how the neighbourhood dog looked - the dog that no one owned, but everyone cared for. The memories overload almost brought tears to my eyes. I lived in block 25, my cousins in block 24. My uncles, aunties and grandparents lived nearby, at Blk 66. A few months ago I brought my daughter to this neighbourhood in #Queenstown and showed her where we lived, where we played, the route I took to walk to school - Tanglin Primary School (which is no more), The path wed take home from our grandmothers place... It was all very nostalgic. My daughter said that she could imagine me as a child as I described each of these events. She wouldnt stop thanking me for sharing that part of my life with her. It will all be gone soon - only to be alive in my own mind. It becomes that much difficult to sink roots into this place, and have a sense of belonging when it keeps changing ever so fast.
