Just a few weeks ago, I took Caden to the doctor.. She asked about family history, my pregnancy, and his birth; I told her the family was generally healthy, a bout of gestational diabetes, birth was great, he did go to the NICU for a few days, and I also let her know that I did have him at a very young age. When I finished that last little tidbit, Aric popped up out of his chair walked directly in front of the doctor sitting in her stool and spouted off in a very quick and almost defensive manner, My mom had me when she was just 16 years old and she had to quit high school so she could take care of me but then she worked at the coffee shop and went to college and now she just got a brand new promotion at work! Now, the timeline of his statement might be a little bit off, (I wish it had all been that simple) but the pride in his voice; the way he puffed his chest when he spoke about me, the love in his eyes when he glanced over to me with a bright beaming smile when he finished telling our story… Thats the best moment Ive experienced as a mom so far. I had no idea that at 8 years old he would remember some of that stuff. I may not have done everything right in my life but those two are a shining example of the things I have. Yesterday I passed a state exam for that promotion and Ive still got 2 state securities exams to go but Arics words have stuck with me. My little boys and I have over come a lot of odds and harsh statistics together and Im so thankful for them and all the help and grace Ive received along the way. If there was just one thing I had to leave them with in this life, its that circumstances dont define anyone; and I think theyre getting it. I cant wait to see what they do with their precious lives.
