Just a follow up from the doctors appointment this morning but - TopicsExpress

Just a follow up from the doctors appointment this morning but before the details, if anyone needs a pediatric Otolaryngology (ENT), make an appointment with Dr. Scott & Dr. Veccohotti, the dynamic duo at Tufts, Boston. We jokingly compare Dr. Scott to Doogie Howser (showing my age). They are both young doctors & in our opinion are the best. Dr. Veccohotti examined Abby today. He could hear her audible mouth breathing from the beginning. He noticed her tonsils were larger today than at her last visit. He also gave her a Lodocaine spray in her nose to numb the area to later scope her nasal passage to take a look at her adenoids. After the examine he did note her adenoids were enlarged. Dr. Vecchiotti reviewed Abbys recent sleep study report. He mentioned the study suggested to him that she has mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, leaning more to moderate than mild. We have a few options to start with before surgery. He started Abby with Flonase to see if this will reduce the inflammation in her nasal passage, which is the reason for the mouth breathing. We will return in 4 weeks to ENT to see if this made a difference. If it doesnt resolve the breathing issue then its surgery to remove her tonsils & adenoids. He cautioned this will alleviate some of the problems (he can fix the tonsils & adenoids by removing them) as well as hopefully help her sleep apnea & reduce her frequent sinus infections. Next he addressed the one key component they cannot rectify, Abbys low muscle tone in her mouth caused from the Leighs Disease. This is also a major contributor to the sleep apnea. Since Abbys diagnosis 3 years ago, we have begun to accept that not everything is fixable. That acceptance only comes with time.
