Just a little bit ago I got to witness Derek Jeter leaving the shortstop position in the All-Star game for the last time. I have been a Yankee fan all of my life. I am a third generation Yankee fan and I have gotten to see some of the greatest Yankees to take the field. While I lived in Greensboro back in early 90s, I got to see Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter and Jorge Pasada play for Greensboro. That is something I will always hold dear. As Jeter left the field all of the players stood in admiration for the Captain and all of the dugout players greeted him with appreciation for his outstanding career. As I watched this, I was deeply saddened because Derek Jeter represents the last player of my generation to retire. I am almost fifty and I am not familiar with the new generation that has taken the field, even the new Yankee players I dont really know to well. Derek Jeter was part of the old guard and set the precedent for how a ballplayer should conduct himself on the field and off. Cooperstown will gladly welcome him one day, He will join the likes of Mantle, Maris, Berra, Ruth and all the other great Yankee players before him. I just hope the next generation of ballplayers will model their careers after one of baseballs greatest statesmen.
