Just a little tidbit of information for all you Calcasieu Common - TopicsExpress

Just a little tidbit of information for all you Calcasieu Common Core loving parents out there. (read until the end. I know its long but trust me you will be interested) As you are aware your child didnt have school today because of a teacher in-service. I have no clue what the in-service was about but Im pretty certain the topic of curriculum and home work came up amongst their discussions. How do I know this you say, well it appears that our school board staff are concerned with the amount of calls and correspondence they have been receiving on the subject. (Interesting I never would have guessed. he he he.) Last Friday an email was sent to principals around the parish from a CPSB official concerning three topics: A. Pacing and District Common Assessments B. Grading Checkpoints C. Homework I will save A&B for later but lets talk about C. Homework: We have been receiving many communications from parents concerned about homework assigned to their elementary aged school children. We have listened to parents, teachers, and administrators and have decided to put some best practices in place regarding the assignment of homework for the elementary grades. All homework should be practice of skills that students have mastered in the class room under the teachers supervision. Parents should never be required or expected to teach a concept at home. (In Bold) First and foremost, the traditional purpose of homework is to help reinforce lessons that have been learned in class. Homework should not be graded. Our greatest area of concern comes from homework being assigned to a child asking them to solve showing their work in a conceptual manner and the parent has only been taught in a traditional method. Expectation: Homework should be a traditional solution of practice that parents understand. Parents should not be expected to try to mirror what the teacher is doing conceptually in the class room. Conceptual modeling in the classroom should allow students to use methods they are comfortable with. There is no need for students to be able to explain and model various methods assigned as home work. This type of learning is for classroom instruction. Assigning homework mostly in the area of fluency practice rather than conceptual understanding and problem solving will reduce frustration on behalf of the parent and confusion for the student. Now what this really says is this: We are really tired of getting calls from these parents. Just send home the stuff the parents can understand. Let them confuse there kids with the old way and straighten them back out with the new way when you get them in class. Dont worry about the test scores Uncle John will take care of them for us.
