Just a little update from me... Tonight, my hubby and I went and delivered a van full of stuff to the guy we met last week, who has been rehoused after a few years on the streets. He had lost his wife and 15 year old son within a short period of time which had lead him into a spiral of self destruction. After a failed attempt at ending his life, he seen the light and decided it was time to sort himself out. He has been in his flat a few weeks but when we met him he had nothing except a few borrowed items from his neighbour, which have to be retuned soon. I promised him we would sort him out before Christmas as I couldnt enjoy my Christmas Day knowing he was sat in a bare, cold flat alone. Using the money you guys have raised and donated, we went out and bought him some new bedding, a Hoover, a microwave, kettle, toaster, pots and pans, lamps and a heater. We also took, from items we have been donated, a rug, coffee table, tv stand, kirchen utensils, crockery, cutlery, boxes and boxes of food, Christmas decorations, 3 boxes of clothes, a box of toiletries, some Christmas cards (for him to give to friends), some ornaments, pictures for his walls, scatter cushions for the sofa we took him at the beginning of the week, towels and coat hangers for his new clothes. After the Christmas I will be sorting him out with a wardrobe and he has already managed to find himself a bed. He was beside himself when we turned up with it all for him. He couldnt believe how much we had for him. He invited me and my husband in to his flat for a look around as he really wanted to show us his new sofa and the Christmas tree we had gave him last week. His flat was very small, cold and damp, but he was so so proud of it, which made it have a lovely atmosphere inside. Although he didnt have much in it, he was showing us where he would put things once he had them and what he planned on doing with the things we had given him. It didnt look much like a home at that moment, but when he spoke about its potential and what he wanted to do to it, I totally felt his passion for his new home and knew that it wouldnt be long before he had it just right. He showed us the kitchen and where the space was for his washer and fridge, which we will be getting to him after Christmas, as soon as they have been PAT tested and then took us into the bathroom, which had a real bad problem with damp. My husband looked at the ceiling and said it needs some treatment on it and a paint which stops damp coming through, so has said he will go round and do that for him as soon as Christmas is out the way. He is also going to ask one of his plumber friends if they could fit a new radiator for him in there, as the one he had in was rusty and rotting. As we left he hugged me and told me we had really made his day. I wish I could have been there as he sat and rummaged through the many boxes of gifts and treats we had prepared for him, but I know how much he will appreciate everything we have gave him. Another Christmas made special by #teamMWW for another special friend, I hope he has a wonderful, warm Christmas in his new home!
