Just a note while I am trying to write my paper on something - TopicsExpress

Just a note while I am trying to write my paper on something totally different: Did you know that the majority of the political Native American tribal designations we have today were created by the US government and were not a historical part of the tribes? For example, my father’s grandmother would sometimes talk about the Shoshone of Idaho, and she would always refer to them as “those Comanche up North.” She had similar designations for the Ute tribal groups. What were more important were the band or clan relationships, which, depending on the tribal structure would often change. I am descended from Peta Nacona, the leader of the Nacona Band of Nuumu (Comanche). This band was absorbed by several others after Peta Nacona died, one of which was the Quahadi band, which is the one my father identifies most closely with. As I continue to grow, I have grown into a Pan-Indian sense of my own identity as a Native American. Maybe this is the result of being raised in an urban inter-tribal environment, but I believe this shift is necessary if the North American Native population is going to culturally survive. I have also begun to see my own “tribal” identity as (yes, Comanche) but related to all of those groups that are linguistically and culturally related to the Comanche (both as they developed on the plains and before). All of this is just a personal note…
