Just a quick off-theme question - would anyone object very much if I made the entire of December an open theme month, rather than splitting it into two the way we usually do? I am going to be very busy in December, as I am sure a lot of other people are. I promise that we would resume themes again in January. Whilst youre pondering that, heres an on-theme photo. In the above header I cut out a figure from the Battlefield Palette. So heres the context, where he is one of the two prisoners on the Ashmomean section. Both have their hands bound behind their backs and are held by standards with arms (Ashmolean Museum 1892.1171). The hair, tightly curled, is beautifully rendered. An adjoining part of the palette, a bigger section, is at the British Museum: britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights/highlight_objects/aes/t/the_battlefield_palette.aspx. Another surviving piece is in the private Köfler-Truniger collection in Luzern, but I believe that it does not adjoin either of the other two pieces.
