Just a reminder that this Monday is the LINK meeting. Dont let it slip by, especially since common emotional issues for our gifted kids are perfectionism, intensities and dealing with stress - and Karen Rohde has a wealth of knowledge and experience on the subject. Please contact LINKs chairperson Kate Walker at (440) 236-6395 for more information. (Sorry, but the LINKparentgroup email account is not accessible at this time) P.S Bad news at the state level: the ODE Achievement committee voted (by a 3-2 vote) against the current gifted operating standards - and the matter will move to a full board discussion and vote in December. Again, the message from OAGC is simple: · The operating standards must include accountability for gifted funds as called for in the law. · Current service standards (i.e. inputs) in the operating standards should remain without an arbitrary sunset provision. · Coordinator services should not be optional. More bad news for gifted education; Senator Peggy Lehner has indicated that she is going to draft a bill to possibly eliminate the value - added subgroups from the report card. And there is no news on Senator Gardners proposed bill to allow school districts to charge students for dual enrollment courses. The above information was essentially copied from OAGCs Advocacy page - so please go to that website for full details. LINK will send another email about whats current re parents advocacy - but dont hesitate to write before then to the ODE and its Achievement committee, and the state superintendent and state board of education. We parents have much to be thankful for re: our districts gifted services - but, IMO, it is horrifyingly unbelievable what is happening to the states law on gifted education and the tragic impact it will have on gifted students across Ohio, additionally tragic because this time of upheaval in Ohios education re: common core standards and the new report cards, could have been a time to introduce positive changes for our high ability students.... All for now - and thanks - Kate Walker, LINK chairperson
