Just a thought Id like to share: Id say that the childs environment has a lot to do with his/her behavioral formation.,, I know many of us believe that and that biggest responsibility lies on parents-- to guide and be there for their children especially during their formative years. One thing I do notice about my son (not bragging or anything) is that most of the time he is a well- behaved and attentive kid, but just lately (this past couple of weeks) when I allowed him to watch a video (even if it was an educational kids youtube video) for a longer period of time and more frequently that he behaved differently; he was more irritable, not paying much attention to my calls and instructions, and he acted up like he wanted to assert his authority over mommy. I was not happy about the change of his behavior. We dont have a functioning TV at home for a good reason, we try to limit him (and even ourselves) to video viewing especially the ones that have more flickering lights, fast movement/animation, and noisy background that over stimulates his developing brain. We do have wholesome nature and animal videos that he likes, Bible stories and some good childrens christian music videos. I am not a psychologist by profession, but seeing the difference in my childs behavior as he was exposed to a different atmosphere at home while watching that kids video has made me realize that media/TV is not good for my child to be exposed with constantly. We like our peace and quite moment in our country home even though we could get pretty loud with our noise and singing, learning time and playtime activity. Training a toddler is not easy. May times I feel like I was a failure and I cant do any better. As a young parent I can only try my best and still wouldnt be enough. I still fail, but I believe in my heart that with the Holy Spirit guidance Id be able to discern and assess various situations with wisdom as to what and when to limit my children to harmful environmental influence that could affect their emotional, social, physical, and spiritual growth. My goal is to look beyond my frailties as a mom, but instead, see each passing day as a stepping stone toward becoming a better parent not a failure. May this be your prayer too. So help us God.
