Just a thought...Long Island - yes, understand a ferry poses issues with medical emergencies....how about Re-Purposing the facility (where transportation may not be such an impediment)...Ill try and make this short. We have an Opiod Addition problem in MA. Current treatment that puts addicts back on the street, after a minimum rehab time has not proven effective. There is a drug Vivitrol, FDA approved, for blocking opiods - both the effect and craving....but I contend that the real treatment is necessary on the back end of rehab, to give the addict a chance to get removed from the effects (and culture) of the drug. Let them start some productive undertaking and reestablish their identity (without the drug). How about making Long Island a Recovery-Camp where recovering addicts can live and work (this is the vital part of it) on the Island - some suggestions: Farm, ReHab/Maintain the Place, Crafts, other work and training that can give these recovering addicts (while taking Vivitrol - a once a month shot) the space, education, responsibilities to rebuild their lives. Int the rare case of an emergency other means of transport could be used - but otherwise, the programs could last 3 - 6 months and not require a daily transportation issue. If you ask about how this is paid for - we already do, both in Social and Financial ways. Not to mention if we save any lives from this epidemic, we all become closer to being saved, ourselves....Merry Christmas - Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men (and women and single Moms).
