Just a thought for the day: I was looking at a beautiful stash and reading comments from others about envy and such. And then the added comments on frugal quilting. And I realized, it is all a matter of perspective. Rome wasnt built overnight and neither was MOST peoples stashes. I know people who may balk at the 10-12$/yard fabric, but think nothing of spending 4-6$ a day on those fancy coffees. (Can you tell I dont think them?) So, brown bag it for a week, skip the fancy coffees, and get yourself some fabric. If you get to know your LQS, and go in and fondle fabric, you will get a feel for what a good fabric feels like, and you can get some great deal on clearance fabrics. I have in the past picked up bolt ends for as little as 2-3/yard. And, Joanns has gotten a lot better quality in *some* of their quilting cotton. True, the price is up there, but with 40% off coupons, that 10/yard fabric is now 6/yard. Build your stash with basics that will work in with many others, such as tone-on-tones, small scale prints, even solids. If you see something that you really love, then indulge once in a while. Instead of buying weekly, maybe set aside 5-10/week in a stash envelope and then you can just go on one big 100$ splurge, which will enable you to get something you really love. Also, shop online! Many of the online stores have awesome sales too. My stash is no where near as large as some of them I see on here but it is sufficient that I could make a quilt every week for at least 5-10 years. Anyway, just remember, most of the stashes you see on here have been many many years in the making. So just quilt and enjoy. Think outside of the box. Get second hand cotton clothing. I bet you could find some Hawaiian shirts even. Can you imagine them in a quilt? Gorgeous!
