Just about 2 weeks before the Grateful Dead closed Winterland for good during their New Year’s Eve show, Bruce Springsteen piad a visit to that historic venue on December 15, 1978, 35 years ago today, a show broadcast on KSAN-FM. During the encores, Bruce broke out the Detroit Medley, his take on Devil With The Blue Dress On, Good Golly Miss Molly, C.C. Rider and Jenny Take A Ride. Springsteen borrowed all 4 tunes from Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, but Ryder was not the original artist for any of them. Ryder had scored a had a top 10 hit in 1965 when he combined the traditional blues song CC Rider with Little Richard’s Jenny, Jenny, aka Jenny Take a Ride. He repeated the formula the following year when he paired Devil With The Blue Dress On, a hit for Shorty Long on Motown’s Soul label, with Good Golly Miss Molly another Little Richard classic. Ryder’s 1966 combo did even better than his first pairing, reaching #4 on the Billboard charts.
