Just an observation about life in a major city from a country guy from a small city. The population of San Francisco, according to the locals, has exploded over the last few years, and they blame it on the tech industries here. Along with that comes exploding real estate prices. The median price of a home, according to them, is about $1M, and that doesnt really buy you an extravagant place. Its about location. The higher up the hill ones goes, the pricier the property. The view is very important here. Public transit is good here. I cant say compared to other cities, but you can live here quite well without a car. The public system is busy to crowded. One still has to walk a lot to get to those services, consequently folks here appear to be more healthy and less obese. Passivity and simple courtesies make for a civil society in a crowded city, and San Francisco seems to be that, both on the sidewalk and on the public transit. Car drivers seem to nearly always defer to the folks on the street, whether it is pedestrian or bicycle. Many folks here bicycle. Im the one doing double fakes at the intersection because im so use to aggressive drivers at home who never defer to pedestrians. Very refreshing in that way here. The have nots are very obvious here, as there are many street people about. I have never once felt threatened however. I was told of 3 major soup kitchens here, and many more that arent so public. My visit to SF, largely due to my hosts, has been great. My feet hurt, but I will not miss any opportunity. I can rest and heal when I get home. One more full day in SF, then Im off to Sacramento, a private community in very northern California, then on to Portland for at least a week. I am happy. Ciao my friends.
