Just as you think that your plate is full enough with so many - TopicsExpress

Just as you think that your plate is full enough with so many horses requiring so much care, specially with Rudy, you get a phone call from Pottawatomie County requesting assistance with 13 neglected horses. As with any rescue, you never know how to prepare yourself for what you may be walking into. I arrived on location to assess the situation and see how many horses we had and to get them rounded up. As the horses hear us whistling and shaking a food bucket, they all came up. Just as I thought I had all the horses placed into this make shift round pen on the property, I see a young filly walking towards us. Just as she approaches, she collapsed. As she laid there, she is nickering to us, and my heart broke. This poor baby has probably never experienced a humans touch prior to our arrival. You could tell she was scared, but yet relieved at the same time. All I could think about was, I didnt want this poor baby to die on this land. Her heart rate was elevated and her gums was very pale. She is emaciated and covered in ticks. I knew we had to get here out of there. We finally got her to her feet and loaded in the trailer. We immediately took her to a nearby Veterinarian where she was able to at least get stabilized. We dropped her off for a few hours, while we went back to attend with the remaining 12 horses. It was a long day, but we finally got all the horses back to our facility last night, including this sweet 6 month old baby. It breaks my heart to think she hasnt ever received a decent meal or known true compassion and love. I hope that we are able to pull her through this horrible neglect. She is extremely anemic and will probably require a blood transfusion. We will know more tomorrow, as she receives another follow up with our Veterinarian. So far, she remains on her feet and is resting comfortably in a stall. I know Rudy is talking to her and telling her not to give up. Im sorry that I wasnt able to give everyone a Rudy update today, but wanted everyone to know what all we do and deal with on a daily basis. I promise to give an update on Rudy tomorrow. He continues to thrive and is doing wonderful!
