Just back from an _amazing_ evening. GRRM treated a group of us to an evening out at the Lensic theater to hear Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band. They play early jazz and blues and its an extraordinary ensemble. Lauries joy in this music is infectious as is his knowledge of this foundational music. For me it was not only a joyful evening with people dancing in the aisles and all of us singing the chorus on a song or two, and keeping the beat as we clapped it was emotional as well. Suddenly I was 7 curled up next to my father listening to this music. When I would spend weekends with him hed let me stay up late and wed listen to his massive collection of jazz. My dad was a musician before he became a staid businessman. He played 5 instruments and sang. 3 members of his band went on to play for Lawrence Welk after dad got out of music. This was my childhood and memories of my larger-than-life father who shaped my life in every way. If you have an opportunity to hear them perform run dont walk to experience this.
