Just been reading some of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius - TopicsExpress

Just been reading some of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius musings.... Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one. Remember that all is opinion. There is no nature which is inferior to art, the arts imitate the nature of things. As for life, it is a battle and a sojourning in a strange land; but the fame that comes after is oblivion. By remembering then that I am a part of such a whole, I shall be content with everything that happens. And inasmuch as I am in a manner intimately related to the parts which are of the same kind with myself, I shall do nothing unsocial, but I shall rather direct myself to the things which are of the same kind with myself, and I shall turn all my efforts to the common interest, and divert them from the contrary. Give thyself time to learn something new and good, and cease to be whirled around. Yet living and dying, honour and dishonour, pain and pleasure, riches and poverty, and so forth are equally the lot of good men and bad. Things like these neither elevate nor degrade; and therefore they are no more good than they are evil The universe is flux, life is opinion. Death, like generation, is a secret of Nature.
