Just came across the first five chapters from a book I was writing almost 20 years ago. Being in my early 20s and apparently narcissistic as a young person is wont to be, the lead character was a somewhat fictionalized version of myself. In reading I remember how much I wanted to be Barry Gifford. Story starts with the lead leaving his life as an Austin musician to find his way in New Orleans and finds himself in a crime story. Of a much higher quality than my prose, is a song mentioned in the first chapter as I drive a banana colored 1957 Chevy out of Austin towards Louisiana.
