Just came up from Auckland a couple of hours ago, and bypassed the Maromaku slip which has closed SH1 by taking the Ruapekapeka Rd. It’s open but just for cars. I also spoke to OPUS who tell me the ONLY recommended route if you’re coming from Auckland and you’re wanting to go north of Kawakawa is SH1 to Brenderwyn, SH12 to Dargaville and up through the forest to Opononi, still on SH12, all the way through to Ohaeawai, and then back on to SH1 – south to Kawakawa, north to Kaitaia. And the same going the other way. Mangakahia Rd and Ruapekapeka Rd are open, but are not recommended because they are smaller, back roads, without a lot of room, and still prone to slips.
