Just chatting with a colleague about development stuff when she said what do you think about the backwardness of people from the third world? I gasped, my heart sank and I smiled. I found my voice again and said, by the way I am Zimbabwean and not backward. The conversation continued freely, I do not mean you, but those others from the third world. Programs should be put in place to TEACH them development. I had to correct my friend again, and the conversation became hot and political. I refused to be treated exceptionally. I now could understand why most of development approaches have capacity building and technical experts or assistance. I believe communities often need opportunities and resources to scale up their innovations and not necessarily the perennial trainings which do not recognize local knowledge and expertise.
