Just coming from the Jamaica Music Conference where some of the important voices in the music industry participated in panels and discussions on various aspects of all the genres of reggae from Ska to Reggae Revival. The final discussion today gave much discussion and agreement that it is essential to preserve reggaes special spaces where indigenous efforts have been born and established to play, develop, discuss and present various aspects of the music. Special mention was made of recent announcements by Government that appear to indicate growing efforts to take over and replace the special spaces, including Government plans to produce and host events identical to those nurtured and developed by indigenous promoters and producers. Concern too at Governments plans to compel registration of reggae artists including those already registered with music industry organisations, with one speaker reminding that when Government controls the music industry, they can ultimately control the message and, even worse, sell it to the highest bidders. The Conference continues tomorrow at UWI, Neville Hall Lecture Theatre beginning at 10 a.m.
