Just completed round one in discussions with members of congress concerning our rivers and water shortages for urban needs or put another way, "will urbanites drink our rivers dry?" This is already a problem in places like Banglore, India, across Nigeria, Benin, and Togo in West Africa and Beijing and Mexico City. We are also seeing the beginning of the problem in several of our western states and other areas of urban growth within the United States. I pointed out that some 30 to 50 percent of our urban water is lost in delivery as a result of the aging infrastructure and simply repairing or replacing leaky pipes would go a long way in fixing the problem. I also pointed out that it would be of great help if agriculture adopted drip irrigation systems which would free up more water.
