Just days after commissioning the Kapichira Phase 2 hydro-electric power project, Escom managers are now caught between a rock and a hard place following major electricity blackout in Blantyre this morning. The commissioning of the Kapichira Project had created a buzz of excitement, as the power plant, which is in Chikhwawa, adds 64 megawatts to the national grid. It was heralded as a move in the right direction in dealing with the legendary problems of blackouts. Speaking during the commissioning of the project, President Joyce Banda challenged ESCOM to jack up in its operations. However, the blackout today, which has also affected the very Umoyo house accommodating ESCOM management, has seen people raising questions on the parastatals’ capacity to deal with power outages this year. There was no immediate comment from Escom on the matter.
