Just finished "The Hustler". Our "hero" tries to pick up a girl who is already drunk early in the morning. I felt like I was watching date rape in action. Later, he hits her. And threatens to hit her. And acts like an ass a lot. So of course she falls in love with him. The reviews talk about how the movie is a classic because it concentrates on the love story, not just the pool playing. I found the love story excruciating and incredibly dated. I also found the attempts to be "deep" ridiculous. But that was apparently the draw at the time. I do not understand 1960s movies.
