Just finished a letter to the editor for the Fayetteville Observer. Will it be published? Who knows? But here it is for your reading pleasure. - Doug A month has passed since the Hoke and Scotland County Joint Gaming Task Force, led by District Attorney Kristy Newton, forced the Sweepstakes businesses in Laurinburg to close their doors, putting over a hundred-plus people out of work and shutting down 21-plus businesses and since this Task Force raided the Cyber Center, confiscating their machines. Its been over a month, but the District Attorney, despite confiscating machines and closing a business, has yet to press any charges or allow the owner to have his day in court. District Attorney Newton was adamant about how illegal the sweepstakes were, but now, shes barely saying anything at all. The Sweepstakes owners had their property confiscated (I call it stolen) by officers in regards to a poorly written law that no one can even say with any absolute certainty is enforcable. What are the charges? Where is the court date? What is the hold-up? Our District Attorney doesnt seem to be willing to give the Sweepstakes owners their day in court. Instead, she had the businesses closed, the property confiscated and apparently destroyed, and yet she wont files charges or allow the owner his constitutional right to present his case. Something is terribly wrong with this picture. Why wont she do her job and allow the system to resolve these issues? Why is she stalling and playing games? I (and the citizens of Scotland County) would really like to know. Thank you... -Douglas Maynard
