Just finished my first listen of DAngelos new album and I wont say much else until I get a few more listens ....but I wasnt disappointed at all Side note: I worked for Raphael saddiq in north Hollywood, CA as a studio runner when I graduated from audio engineering school and one of my first jobs was delivering a huge sack of chronic in a Manila envelope to a hotel in Santa Monica ...I begged my homie Reggie to drive with me cuz I didnt know LA that well (and this was pre-gps era) ...I delivered the package to The room and this cat Malcolm answered the door and invited me in. Started shooting the shit with him and out walks DAngelo ...I was trying to keep my cool but I had just spent the whole summer before playing the hell out of Voodoo and was a die hard fan....then they started rolling up white owls ...Now, mind you I had never smoked Cali chronic ever in my life. And they lit up and I hit this blunt like it was the stress I grew up on in Texas. Ill never forget DAngelo and Malcolm (who I discovered was his road manager) both told me to ease up lol....I tried to act like I was a pro and kept hitting it like it was nothing. We ended up talking for a good 20 minutes while my boy waited downstairs in my car. When I finally left and made it to my car ...the paranoia set in....as elated as I was that I had just smoked with one of my musical heroes, I couldnt control the panic and my heart started beating so fast I thought I was going to die. Cold Sweating kicked In....my lips were numb...I tried to drive. Couldnt. Had to pull over and let my boy drive. We got about 3 miles down the 405 and I made him pull over. I used a courtesy phone on the side of the highway to call 911. I was convinced I was dying .... 30 minutes later the paramedic is asking me if I was smoking crack...then gave me Ativan to calm me down. Most embarrassing moment ever having to explain all this hours later to Raphael Saddiq (another one of my musical heroes and now Boss) who told me new rule ...no more smoking with DAngelo Next day was the video shoot for Raphael saddiqs Be here video and DAngelo was a no show for the 10 am start time. Then 11 am rolled around. No DAngelo. Then 12. Then 1pm. Then close to 2 everyone was convinced he wasnt going to show The day before though one of the Video set designers had brought never before heard Jimi Hendrix masters on reel to reel from electriclady land studios for Raphael to peep out. Raphael knew DAngelo was obsessed with Jimi (rented out electric lady land for a year to record Voodoo) so he had me call Malcolm and tell him we had unreleased Jimi Hendrix reels at the studio. Within 30 minutes DAngelo was there but still wouldnt come on set, which was being filmed at an apartment complex right around the corner...instead DAngelo had me go find candles....had the asst. engineer load up the Jimi reels to play through the SSL, dim all the lights AND locked his self in the control room for 3 hours (and from what I heard got naked with like 20 candles lit around him) and just zoned out to Hendrix. When he was done - he finally came out and filmed his scenes for the video After the video he walked up to me and says hey smokey...I heard about you yesterday...stay away from the pigeon coop and laughs hysterically lol #History
