Just finished seeing the film version of Enders Game, a great film, Im still mulling over the prophetic, archetypal nature of the film. The Psyche is and has been pouring forth apocalyptic imagery via film, public discourse, and dreams with ever increasing ferocity in our era. Though EG wasnt the effects carnival that avatar was, it personified the archetypal nature of the same themes without glorifying the same tired, adolescent hero story which Hollywood delivers ad naseum. In the film Avatar, the Hero from Camerons metaphorical Bethlehem eclipsed the horror of apocalypse (Calypso seduced odysseus and detained him for 7 years as I recall) via the usual over-emphasis on the special effects of war. Like Enders Game, Avatar finishes up with some degree of connection to the animistic NaVi, but only on a justice level; unlike Enders Game, Avatar lacks Enders betrayal and his personal decision to find a means of attaining empathic attunement with the creatures who inhabited the world he has unknowingly annihilated, alone at the age of 15. Ender was betrayed, just as Jesus was betrayed, though Jesus was betrayed by God and his disciples. Enders Game was far more consistent with the wests archetypal myth. Camerons archetypal failure was not letting us meet the inhabitants of the animistic world humans invaded on a soul level as poignantly as Enders did. Overall, its the same western archetypal story, but Ender, like Jesus was betrayed, which is much closer to the western myth. Years ago, ET personified the myth, almost too perfectly; that is, it worked if one didnt reflect on it. ET arrived from heaven (space) in a shed (read manger), He was found by a nobody, a child, however the establishment of the day (scientists) misunderstood him to the extent that he died (crucified). 3 days later, his disciples discovered his resurrected body in a ditch. He then ascended to the Father (via space ship), however not without touching the boys heart and telling him he would always be with him (read, Holy Spirit). While the film was entertaining, it was essentially plagarism. ET translated the Christ story via in a post-modern guise, via an alien story. Note however, this is a dated film; it replayed the wests archetypal myth, sans apocalypse. In my practice, I hear apocalyptic dreams on a regular basis. However, in the last 10 years or so Ive also noticed an ever increasing number of animals in patients dreams. In this sense, Orson Scott Cards Enders Game seems prophetic, as ultimately Ender realizes his dreams are intertwined with the insect-like Queens attempts to communicate with him. He meets her only after discovering that he was betrayed into killing the Queens entire race. I highly recommend Enders Game.
